My retro kitchen!
Instead, I have chosen to go retro! I want a classy retro look with vintage and "new retro" pieces that way we can actually use items as well.
The very popular "red classic diner" look is everywhere and would be very easy to decorate with, but anyone who knows me, knows I need a challenge or well, it is just not any fun for me!
With that in mind, I have opted to go "aqua blue" / white / and some VERY subtle light pink accents (and I mean subtle! ) All appliances shall be white, as there was not allot of color by way of appliances in the 50's
Thinking a checkered floor would be a classy cool
A White Kitchen Aid mixer
White apron sink or farmers sink
old tin lunchboxes
One of those crazy black cat clocks with the moving eyes! sweet!
( a few hidden Mickey's perhaps!)
Anyone familiar with the "50's Primetime Cafe" located at MGM theme park in Walt Disney World will find that I am stealing decorating ideas from them! =)
I would LOVE some feedback, ideas, tips, etc!
Thanks

Pin Curls and rollers oh my!
Again I find myself praising woman of the past for their efforts in looking good every day! The results are amazing with pin curls, they can take a good amount of time to put in but they hold very well and are super comfortable to sleep in, unlike rollers. Hair tends to dry faster in pin curls then in rollers, and my hair holds moisture so the faster drying, the better.
I cheated last night and used rollers, mom took care of the back for me because it was late and I was lazy!
Today is Joe's company picnic out in Framingham, MA and I thought it would be fun to give myself some retro curls. Not to mention how very much Joe adores me in curls!
I can't imagine doing pin curls every 2-3 days like those amazing ladies from the forties! Life moved at a much slower pace back then, there was just time for that sort of thing. Now it's run here, run there, yadda yadda yadda!
In closing:
Perms suck, they are the very lazy way out and almost always end up looking like crap. If you want a truly vintage look, go for the real deal, Pin Curls! If you are in a rush, only use the pin curls around your face for that nice tight bouncy curl and use rollers in the back to help blend the curls. It is also fun and fast to put your hair in a nice high, tight ponytail at night, spritz with water and use rollers in your tail, wrap your head with a scarf tightly, followed by a sleep cap and VOILA' ... retro chic without the fuss!

Real woman wear fat!
The very definition of voluptuous, Marilyn Monroe

So in conclusion, I feel that woman today are way to sensitive about their weight. Subtle curves are a GOOD thing ladies. There was a reason they were called pinup girls, not a one of them were skin and bones either. Our men like us with a little cushion! Find a healthy weight, then strut around like you are a pinup girl reborn...let the stick figures be jealous!

Lower a fever remedy!!!!
To reduce fever - Anisya Bolkonski has been kind enough to share this gem with us all!
I know of an exceptionally effective natural remedy for healing burns and lowering a fever: egg whites.
Egg whites are by far the best method to lower a high temperature within MINUTES! When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I had acquired a fever so high that I started to hallucinate. My mother was in a panic, she feared brain damage if something didn't lower the fever and FAST. My grandma told her to soak 2 cloths or handkerchiefs in egg whites and put on the soles of the feet (cover with socks). The egg whites instantaneously start to draw the temperature DOWN from the brain (where it is dangerous) to the feet (where it can do no damage). After that incident my mom used this method successfully every time I had high temp.
The egg whites are also a miracle cure for burns, even severe ones. Soak or coat affected area in egg white. While the egg white is still wet you will feel no pain from the burn. As soon as it dries up the pain comes back so reapplication is necessary. This method not only alleviates the pain it actually heals and prevents scarring from the burn.
I submitted this remedy to http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/fever.html and there has been a lot of positive feed back:
I would like to let more people know about the miraculous effectiveness of treating fevers and burns with egg whites so please post this on your site if you deem fit.
Ever wonder why?
I have never seen a cat run in their sleep? or any other animal for that matter...
Free time and the power of word
I was thinking maybe a short story or mini-memoir for starters.
I must jot down these tasks I give myself or I will never get around to them. I apologize for the ramblings!
Girly girl at last?
Just wanted to share my most recent purchase.
Dresses!
For those of you who really know me prepare yourselves for shock and awe!
I have 3 dresses I just bought!
They are very vintage inspired (got lucky, was not even trying!)
I must say, you cannot help but feel ultra feminine when wearing thigh highs and heels! =P
I plan to take pictures wearing them and if that ever happens, I will post them or a link to them!
My next mission is to find fire engine red shoes to go w/ the black one! Must have an ankle strap!
Intro to this blog!
I have decided that now would be a good time to start recording memories that my grandparents have tucked away in their hearts. There is something about the way their generation was brought up that simply fascinates me. Life was simple yet refined. Ladies wore gloves as a rule, and never left the house without their hair perfectly sculpted and makeup tweaked to absolute perfection. Men were proud gentlemen who worked long hard days to provide for their family without complaint. Their cheeks scented lightly with aftershave and the tailored suits freshly pressed by their doting wives. This was a time where families sat down together for home cooked dinners followed by a classic board game amid chatter of the days accomplishments. This is the America I wish we had today. It would seem we have been spoiled by technology and "lazy" ways to tackle everyday chores.
Example:
Mothers once used cloth reusable diapers on babies. This, by no means was over the top work for anybody (hard work was doing laundry by soap and washboard back in the day)
Someone decided that was "too much work" ... ya know...laundry and all! Now we have bad for the environment plastic overpriced throw aways that studies show cause more rash related problems in babies today then cloth diapers. In fact, cloth diapers (even with todays steep prices on everything) are still very affordable.
I challenge any woman today to lead the life of a 1950's homemaker...go for it.
Why on earth did women decide it would be "better" to work all day then lead an active role in raising their children? I wonder why kids today are on depression medication?! Perhaps they need more time with their mothers?
I understand that women decided to be liberal, and I say "good for you" to any single mom out their busting heir butt to support their children. But can we just look back and accept WHY single mothers are forced to work 2 jobs to make ends meet?
Lets see, in America, families were doing just fine on ONE salary. Then women got restless, or felt they were unequal to men (WWII probably played an active part in this, being that some women were seeking extra money while husbands were at war thus they sought out employment). Once the government caught wind that women had started working, it no longer seemed "right" to continue with the current "cost of living" then over time, everything got jacked up.
In my opinion, this marked the beginning of the end to all things sacred in family living.
I invite you to share stories, opinions, facts, etc
